DELINQUENT TAX DRIVE PROGRESSING
Delinquent taxes amounting to approximately $16,000 were found due in Union County during the recent drive by State examiner J. C. Wilkins, County Auditor Frank McCurdy stated.
The check up went as far back as seven years in some cases but for the most part took in three year payments. Six hundred delinquent tax accounts were found and letters were sent to each.
The actual amount from delinquent taxes and new applicants who had never filed before was $15,951.28.
Thus far, approximately 500 persons have reported to the auditor's office to pay their taxes or to explain why they no longer pay personal taxes. At the beginning Mr. Wilkins sent out 600 cards to persons believed to be delinquent in the personal taxes.
The last hundred who did not report when asked were solicited by the collector.
Collections so far total a little more than half, but the full collection is expected to be in within a short time. The above tax collections include only those due prior to July 1.
