One of the favorite arguments of liquor advocates is that just as much or more, whiskey is used in "dry" times as when saloons are unrestricted. Sensible people, as a rule, know that this is utterly untrue, yet some persons are led to believe that there is something in it. The report of United States Commissioner of Internal Revenue John G. Capers shows what legal prohibition does. Just as the temperance wave has been spreading over the United States, so the manufacture of whiskey has decreased. The official report shows that the past year. In 1907 the total production of distilled spirits was 174,712,218 gallons. In 1908 it has fallen to 133,889,563.
Think of it—40,822,655 gallons less of liquor used this year than last, and the temperance people just getting started!
About $18,000,000 less taxes on whiskey was paid to the government.
What an enormous saving there must have been to the homes of the people!
