THE FREE PRESS.
THURSDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 10.

Stand back, and let Vermont come forward and give her testimony!

VERMONT ELECTION.
The Whigs have made a clean sweep in Vermont. In the last Congress the State was represented in Congress by 3 Whigs and 2 Van Buren members. Now the Whigs have the whole five by the following majorities: Hall 2,500; Everett 2,300; Slade 3,500; Young 1,000; and Mattocks 181. The Whig majority for Governor is about 10,000—Showing a Whig gain of several thousand since last year—Jenison's majority for Governor then being only 2,351. The Senate will consist of 23 Whigs and 2 Van Burenites—and in the House the Whigs are in the proportion of 3 to 1. Enough said.

RHODE ISLAND.
The official returns of Rhode Island show that the Legislature will stand 48 Harrison and 24 Van Buren. All right in Rhode Island.

A WORD IN SEASON.—The Hagerstown Mail, a Van Buren paper, gives the following advice to its party in Maryland—and we deem it not amiss to adopt its language and repeat the admonitions for the benefit of our friends in Virginia. We must not relax our exertions because of the splendid victories we have achieved and are still achieving in every quarter of the Union; nor, in future political struggles, rely upon our former strength for a victorious result.

"The two last elections show a regular Democratic gain in the State (Maryland;) and our intelligence from all parts of the State in relation to the two next, (in October and November) is of the most cheering character. But it must not be forgotten that an aristocracy, rendered desperate by the many defeats they have suffered from the unbiased action of the people, have again arrayed themselves against the Democracy: And unless our exertions are equal to those of our opponents—unless we "gird on our armor" and manfully resist every artifice and movement of the foe, we may, in many instances, be defeated, where proper exertions would have given us a victory. In any political struggle, we should never rely upon our former strength for a future result. Artifice may mislead—and subtle persuasions may deceive many individuals as to the true course of duty. We should never, therefore, relax in our exertions in behalf of the just cause in which we are engaged."

This is good advice when addressed to the friends of Harrison and Reform, and we hope they will bear it in mind until the 2d of November. Let us not be defeated "where proper exertions would have given us a victory." Keep the ball in motion for 7 or 8 weeks longer, and we shall have gained without doubt the land which every emotion of patriotism for the last twelve years pointed out for conquest. After so many years of weary, toilsome wanderings through the wilderness of Jackson and Van Burenism, the clear fields and cultivated grounds appear. Let the Whig party now do its duty, and their Government will be reformed—their Constitution vindicated—their Republic preserved.

The Whigs (says a contemporary) must keep up the Fire from now until November. The Enemy are "reeling to and fro like a drunken man"—they are staggering under the dreadful fire that we have poured into them. We must not give them time to recover. We must load and fire as fast as we can.

Business men, from now until November your business is politics.
Merchants, your time must be "invested" in the service of the Whigs, and in six months you will reap a profit of 100 per cent. in restored confidence, in well regulated exchanges, and in the general firmness and stability of trade.
Farmers, you must cultivate the political field from now until November—you must destroy the stump and wire grass and chinch bug of loco focoisin, and next spring you will sell your crops at good prices and for good money.
Mechanics, you must work upon the Whig log cabin without ceasing until November, and next year you will have plenty of work and "good wages," Mr. Buchanan to the contrary notwithstanding.
Manufacturers, you must work at the Whig loom from now until November, and in a few months your fabrics will command good prices, and your pockets hold good dividends.
The great interest of all the business people of this country is, at present, politics. Every moment they devote to the Whig cause, is so much time usefully and profitably devoted to their own trade or business, whatever it may be, and he who fails to come forward and do his duty, is neglecting that business by which he hopes to earn bread and support his family.— We say then, again, keep up the Fire, keep up the Fire!
