Outruns AF Helicopter
FAIRBANKS (AP) - A fast flying stork outran an Eielson AFB helicopter Sunday morning between Nulato and Tanana with the race ending dramatically a thousand feet above the Yukon Valley 4 miles from Tanana. The stork won.
"Operation Stork" got underway early Sunday morning when the FAA radio station at Galena received a message that a pregnant native woman at Nulato needed immediate medical attention.
The helicopter on detached duty at Galena took off with Lts. Hart and Conti at the controls and with medical technician Sgts. Allen and Maxwell.
Arriving at Nulato they placed Mrs. Pauline Stickman aboard the chopper who was due to have her second child.
A half hour out of Nulato the baby was delivered by Sgt. Allen, a father of four.
All are reportedly doing well, the mother, the baby, Leonard Stickman Jr., and the Air Force crew.
