and House met at 2 o'clock today. In
the Senate, after routine business the
fortification bill was considered and
a amendment to reduce the appropria-
tion for gun and mortar batteries for the
defense of harbors at Boston, New
York, San Francisco, Hampton Roads
and Washington, from $1,000,000 to
$750,000 was agreed to. Other amend-
ments of minor importance were adop-
ted, and the Senate without final dis-
position of the bill, adjourned.
In the House a bill was passed
amending section 180 of the revised
statutes, so as to read, Vacancies oc-
curred by death or resignation shall
not be temporarily filled under the
three preceding sections for a longer
period than thirty days. The present
law limits the time to ten days and the
bill has special reference to the appoint-
ment of a successor to Secretary Windom. J. W. Owenby was brought be-
fore the bar of the House and express-
ing a willingness to testify before the
silver pool committee, purged himself
of contempt. House adjourned.
