Full Text

For the Gazette of the United States,

Mr. Fenno,

As the event of the French keeping Christmas at Amsterdam has been predicted with a degree of exultation—and as the news of our allies the Dutch paying under the yoke of our allies the French, will probably be published as Glorious Intelligence by some of the neutral printers of this neutral country, the following extract from a Lansingburgh paper may not be an unreasonable hint—more especially as during our late conflict with Great Britain, those who risked a halter in supporting our liberties and independence, considered this country as under great obligations to the United Provinces, for the treaty they formed with us, the loans they made us, and the losses they incurred by entering into the war in consequence of the connection they entered into with the United States—In addition to these considerations it is highly probable, that there is no event that could happen in Europe, which would be more destructive to our merchants than the reduction of the United Provinces by France—after all, as the newsmongers assure us, that the Dutch impatiently expect the French, and without doubt wish them to carry off into France all their superfluous cash, and other moveable property, there will be the greatest propriety in publishing their success in Holland as "Glorious News."

Yours,

NEUTRALITY.

The Extract

We have seen the hand bill from the Register at Albany, containing the "Glorious News?" but are not a little chagrined that so pompous a bill should be ushered upon the public, from a mere paragraph, in an eastern paper, made up from a third hand report, communicated by Mr. --, who had it from Capt. --, who had it from somebody; and even, were this said glorious news true, where is the room for Americans to rejoice? Is it forsooth because one of the European nations, most friendly to this country, has been over-run and conquered by another nation, for whom we have the highest regard? Our opinion does not tally with this idea; the only Glorious news we can expect from Europe, is a termination to their present differences, a peace that shall reconcile all the jarrings between the belligerent powers; give to each, and the individuals who compose them, all those invaluable rights and privileges which they are entitled to, in virtue of the charter granted them by God and Nature.
