"ROMNEY PLEA TO NEGROES:
GIVE UP SEGREGATED VOTING"
By Earl Mazo, National Political Correspondent
N.Y. Trib. 9-27

George Romney is making a novel appeal to the Negro
voters of Michigan.
He is urging them to abandon their "segregated vot-
ing pattern" and extend their drive for "integration" to
both political parties.
(See PLEA, Page 2)

(Continued from Page 1)

"This segregated voting pattern has led you to be taken
for granted by the Democrats," the Republican gubernatorial
candidate tells Negro audiences. "This makes your
political effort self-defeating."

Then he adds:

"Is segregation in the ballot box any better or more
defensible than segregation in any other form? Isn't it just
as wrong for all members of a race to set themselves apart
and to vote as a block, regardless of the merits of the candidates involved; as it would be for others to set them apart?
Doesn't integration mean integration in all things?"

fully as noted by political strategists across the country.
Therefore the returns from mainline members' Negro voting precincts Nov. 6 may well influence both parties' basic attitudes towards the civil rights issue in future
campaigns.

At this point in his contest with Democratic Gov. John
B. Swainson, candidate Romney's effort appears to be fruit-
less. Fact is, the latest polls show Mr. Romney pulling
ahead and winning the governorship by virtue of gains in
all segments of Michigan's voting population except
among the Negroes.
