CORRESPONDENCE
To The Editor

In your Monday edition you published a letter from Mr. Edwin C. McKentey in which he expressed concern at the loss of the golf course land to the College of the Virgin Islands.

I would like to assure Mr. McKentey that in the near future the college expects to confine most of its activity to the western half of its proposed site. Any impingement on the golf course will be purely marginal. The college trustees are as eager as he is to preserve St. Thomas' only golf course as long as possible

On the other hand, if the college grows as rapidly as I think it will, the time will come-five, ten or fifteen years from now when it will have to use more of the desired site. The golf course at that time may have to be sacrificed in the interest of higher education for more people. I am sure that when and if it becomes obvious that more space is needed for an expanded and enlarged college neither Mr McKentey nor anyone else will feel that golf is more important.

I hope, incidentally, that he and his fellow golfers will begin planning now for the golf course of the future, just as we are planning the college of the future. I have played the course and enjoyed it very much but if the islands hope to use a golf course as a part of their future appeal to tourists it is time now to begin to think of an eighteen hole course, with grass greens and the difficult traps, bunkers and obstacles which make golf the popular game that it is.

Meanwhile, I am sure Mr. McKentey and many others will continue to enjoy the Herman F Moore course for some time to come.

Main Argument

the college will initially limit its activities to minimize impact on the golf course but may require more land in the future for educational expansion, which should take precedence over golf; planning for an improved future golf course is encouraged to support tourism.
