Grading Being Done and Concrete Walk, Stone Wall Made
The lawn surrounding Beard's Lutheran Church, near Chewsville is undergoing extensive improvements. The entire surface is being graded to a level, dirt for this purpose being brought from the United Brethren Church at Funkstown, where improvements had also been made and a surplus of top soil remained.
A fine concrete walk has been made leading to the church entrance and a beautiful and substantial stone wall erected the entire length of the yard in front of the church.
Beard's Church is one of the historical places in this county. The corner stone bears the dates 1773-1860.
The date of 1773 represents the original church, which was located along the Antietam Creek, on the opposite side from the Willow Grove Mills, formerly Trovinger's Mill for a number of years. The date of 1860 represents the time the church was moved to its present location. The first church was a log structure and was so built to provide defense from the Indians, if necessary.
The deed to this old church along the Antietam provided for an entrance to and from the church forever; however, nothing remains at the old site today to identify it, yet some years ago old gravestones were found, establishing at least the approximate location of this pioneer place of worship.
The congregation and Sunday School today remains intact, in fact, the Sunday School had an attendance of 30 more on the first Sunday in the New Year of 1939 than on the corresponding Sunday of last year.
The pastor is Rev. Dr. I. D. Worman and the Superintendent of the Sunday School is Robert Reynolds.
Election of an elder and a deacon will take place in two weeks.
