Caution to the Public.—There are in circulation, counterfeit two dollar bills of the Hartford Bank, intended to be imitation of bills from a plate engraved by Reed, the ornaments of which on the ends of the bills, &c. are made to resemble die work. The true bill of this plate, signed John Caldwell, President, bear date the 1st of Jan. A. D. 1818. Those signed by Nathaniel Terry, President, the 1st Nov. 1819.
The counterfeits are signed Nathaniel Terry, President, and Horace Burr, Cashier, and bear date the 10th of Oct. 1819. The engraving, except the figure of the ram on the top, is done pretty well; the date number and signature are done very badly.
The public are cautioned against receiving bills on the N. Y. North River Bank, without accurate examination. A gentleman, in N. York, received one, without suspicion, for five dollars, which proved to be a one dollar bill, with the figure encircled by a similar copper-plate design, to that of the genuine five dollar bills, ingeniously pasted over it.
