Week Opens Today
At Atlanta U. Center
The observance of Religious Emphasis Week in the Atlanta University Center will begin on Sunday, March 2, with the University Center leader, Lloyd J. Averill, Jr., speaking on "The Age of Innocence." This service and those to follow on March 3, 4, and 5, will be at 7:30 p.m., in Sisters Chapel, Spelman College campus. Music on Sunday will be by the Morris Brown Choir and Colonius Davis, organist. Following each service there will be a reception and informal discussion meeting with Mr. Averill. Those on Monday and Wednesday are scheduled for the Chemistry Lounge, Morehouse College, and that on Tuesday in Kresge Hall, Clark College.
Mr. Averill, who is dean of the chapel and associate professor of religion at Kalamazoo College, Michigan, will also be available for conference Monday through Wednesday, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., in the Faculty Lounge, Dean Sage Hall.
The Religious Emphasis Week Committee, of which President B. E. Mays of Morehouse College is chairman, has chosen as a theme for the meetings "Religious Values in a Hydrogen Age." Mr. Averill's later subjects will be "Man and Society - Christian and Contemporary," "Biblical Faith and Modern Knowledge," and "Modern Warfare and Christian Decision."
This is the fifth year in which the six institutions in the Atlanta University Center have joined in the observance of Religious Emphasis Week. In addition to the Center leader, there will be local leaders on the several campuses. The Reverend Isaac H. Bivins of New York will be at Clark, Dean James Kelly of West Virginia State College at Morehouse, President Rembert Stokes of Wilberforce University at Morris Brown College, and Dr. J. Neal Huzhley of North Carolina State College at Spelman. Because of illness the appearance of Dr. Pitirim A. Sorokin at Gammon Theological Seminary has been postponed.
