BUTLER STREET Y.M.C.A. RALLIES WITH ATLANTA WORLD PLAN TO PROMOTE SWIMMING HELP

The Atlanta World realizes that the ability to swim, other than one of the most wholesome recreations, is very important. Thousands of lives are lost annually as a result of drowning. Increasing numbers are using municipal swimming pools yearly and more and more cities are providing this helpful health builder for its youth especially; increasing numbers are spending their week-ends and summer vacations at watering places; occasionally pleasure boats sink, sea going vessels meet with some hazard where passengers need to know how to swim; therefore every girl and boy in Atlanta should be taught to swim.

The YMCA and YWCA have laid great stress on this activity for many years and there is to be found in their buildings a splendid swimming pool which is used to capacity. There are only two swimming places in the city for Negroes, a population of more than 90,000. Every boy and girl especially should be taught to swim under well trained instructors before venturing into the larger public swimming places where the numbers make it impossible for a more individual oversight and direction.

The Atlanta World through the Butler Street Y.M.C.A. which organization is rapidly extending its program more effectively into the very community life of Atlanta and is doing a service for Negro boys long needed beyond a question, is making it possible this year for hundreds of boys and girls, men and women to learn to swim during the BIG-FREE-LEARN-TO SWIM WEEK, Monday June 6th to 11th.

The staff of swimming instructors will be announced later and will be headed by John H. Bell, city's most outstanding swimmer and life saver.
