Hon. S. B. Olmstead—His Resignation as President of the Council.

We regret that a proper regard for his own dignity of character, obliged the Hon. S. B. Olmstead, late President of the Council, to resign his position in that body, on the 16th inst. Possessing rare abilities for the post of presiding officer—enjoying the respect of all intelligent men for his integrity and sound sense, and their warmer regard for the genial qualities of his noble nature—this gentleman has thus far through the session relieved the majority of the Council from utter reproach, in that they obeyed their better impulses in selecting a man of honor to preside over them. He accepted the position unanimously tendered, in the belief that the tender came from honorable men, and was, therefore, one which could be honorably accepted. But when the majority of that body made a rule of violating pledges, and a merit of stultification, and added thereto the practice of discourtesies unbecoming men in private stations, and especially disgraceful to the character of Councillors, Mr. OLMSTEAD, acted in the only way compatible with his self respect, and resigned a position which, in such a body, it was a dishonor to retain. The Council accepted the resignation, and testified the regard of its members for the "fitness of things," by electing Wm. P. MURRAY, a man who makes a boast of his scoundrelism, to the vacant chair.
