GRESHAM'S BRAVE SAILORS
Take Off Crew of Sinking Republic at
Risk of Own Lives.

Newport, R. I., Jan. 24.—The gallant work of a boat's crew from the United States revenue cutter Gresham in taking off Capt. Sealby and the details of the crew of the Republic who remained on board that vessel almost to the very last moments that she stayed above the water is spoken of particularly in wireless dispatches received here tonight.

The Republic had been towed a short distance by the Gresham, the derelict destroyer Seneca, which had arrived at the scene later in the day, also assisting in the work of towing. Suddenly the Republic, which was already low in the water, was seen to be settling still more and rapid work on the part of the boat crew of the Gresham was necessary to get the Republic's crew away from the vessel.

Both the Gresham and the Seneca proceeded toward Gay Head after the Republic went down.

W. J. MOONEY
Belonged in Langdon, N. D., and One
of the State's Wealthiest Men.

Grand Forks, N. D., Jan. 24.—W. J. Mooney, who was killed in the collision of the steamers Republic and Florida, was 62 years old. He was engaged in the banking and real estate business at Langdon, N. D. He was one of the wealthiest men in North Dakota. In the last six years, Mr. Mooney had traveled over the greater portion of the world. On the Republic he was bound to the milder climates of southern Europe. A son, John Mooney, deputy state bank examiner, survives.

MRS. EUGENE LYNCH.
Was Boston Woman With Husband on
a Long Trip to Italy.

Boston, Jan. 24.—Mrs. Eugene Lynch, who was killed on board the Republic at the time of the collision with the Florida, was a native of Troy, N. Y., and was formerly Miss Mary Gettings. Mr. Lynch, who was injured, is a liquor dealer in this city and came here from Pittsfield, Mass. The Lynches left for Italy and closed their home at 68 Elm Hill avenue, Roxbury, expecting to be gone several months.

Mr. Lynch intended to visit the earthquake district in Sicily, while Mrs. Lynch was to have stayed in Rome.

Last Tuesday evening, before their departure for New York to board the Republic, Mr. and Mrs. Lynch were given a very pretty dinner party at the Algonquin Club by the surveyor of the port, Jeremiah J. McCarthy. Twenty persons were present. One of the features of the decorations was a large model of the steamer Republic, fully rigged, with the American and Italian flags flying as she might look leaving New York harbor.

This decoration formed the center piece of the big dining table.

A TOTAL LOSS.
Supplies for Uncle Sam's Ships Go
Down on the Republic.

Washington, Jan. 24.—The navy department's stores aboard the Republic destined for Admiral Sperry's battleship fleet were valued at $61,000. These, it is expected, will prove a total loss. The stores were to have been taken to Gibraltar by the Germania, but for some reason this plan was changed and they were sent on the Republic. They comprise immense quantities of fresh and smoked meats, turkeys, potatoes, sugar, butter and eggs.

It will be impracticable for the navy to start a fresh cargo in time to meet the battleship fleet, and the admiral may purchase his meats and other supplies from those aboard the Celtic, which has been sent to Italy for the sufferers, the money to be paid for them, being used for other relief purposes.
