CHARGED IN DEATH OF WHITE FARMER
Cobb was convicted for the slaying on June 1 of Dumas, whose farm he and his family lived as share-croppers. The slaying took place in a small plantation town near Monticello in Jasper County.
Testimony at the trial showed that the slain man and young Cobb quarreled in the presence of Cobb's mother and Dumas son after the two had gone fishing together. Cobb admitted that he later shot Dumas and dumped his body on a roadside.
Mrs. Leatna Cobb, 45-year-old mother of the condemned Negro youth widowed since 1948 with nine children, worked for Dumas in a domestic capacity without pay, save room and board.
The Jasper County Superior Court jury deliberated 45 minutes before rendering the guilty verdict, without recommending mercy.
