Draft Probe on Unionmen Asked
WASHINGTON, NOV. 13 (UP)-
Members of a house naval affairs subcommittee today asked selective service to re-examine the draft deferments of union officials - particularly those at the Brewster Aeronautical Corp.
The request, directed to Selective Service Director Lewis B. Hershey. followed a heated exchange at yesterday's subcommittee hearing between Rep. Melvin Maas, R., Minn.,
and Gabriel Joseph De Angelis, financial secretary of the Brewster local of the United Auto Workers (CIO).
Maas got De Angelis to admit authorship of an article in "Aero News," a union paper, attacking Brewster management and the subcommittee and asking. "Does Rep. Maas think he is in Germany? We wish to hell he was.'
FLATTERED BY INSULT Maas retorted. "I'm rather flattered to be insulted by you."
He added, "I think you will be worth more to the nation carrying a gun. I'm going to do everything I can to get you in the army."
"I'll bet you are," De Angelis snapped back.
The angry words came after another committee member. Rep. F. Edward Hebert, D.. La., called De Angelis "young. inexperienced, hot-headed-the type that is getting organized labor into trouble."
Maas not only asked Hershey to review De Angelis' 2-A classification on grounds of "essential" work, but said Hershey might also look into the deferments of other union officials of draft age.
STORM OF PROTEST He said recent deferment of Joseph Curran, president of the National Maritime Union (CIO). had drawn a storm of protest from all over the country.
Rep. Ward Johnson, R., Calif., another committee member, also asked a recheck of the deferment of Paul J. Krebs, secretary of the Brewster Local. However. he said in view of Krebs' statement that he had stomach ulcers he might be unfit for military service.
Krebs answered charges of loafing by workers at Brewster plants by stating that any loafing was due to failure of the management to provide them with materials with which to work.
