Several Attempts of this Kind have been made by making the salt Water pass through filtering Stones or Bags of Earth, but without Success; for after repeated Trials, the Water was at last brackish and the Stones or Earth becoming impregnated with the Salt, lost their Virtue and was obliged to be renewed.
It is said that the Method now proposed, is intirely different from all former Experiments, that it is done by Boiling, and the Infusion of a particular Substance; that but a small Quantity of Fuel will be necessary to serve a Ship for this Purpose on a long Voyage; and that out of one Gallon of salt Water, a Quart of good fresh Water can be produced.
It is to be wished that the Inventors of so beneficial a Contrivance may succeed in their Experiments; and that they will not want for Encouragement.
Upon Application to the Lords of the Admiralty, they were required to exhibit their Performance, by refreshing a Quantity of Sea Water at once, and likewise to estimate what Quantity of Fuel would be necessary to serve that Intention only: They are now preparing a large Machine for that Purpose, and when that is finished, the Experiment is to be made where their Lordships shall think proper, in the mean Time they desire no Gratuity or Reward 'til the whole invention be compleated.

A method to make sea water fresh by boiling and infusing a particular substance has been discovered, differing from prior failed filtration attempts. It requires little fuel and yields a quart of fresh water from a gallon of sea water, beneficial for ships on long voyages. Inventors applied to Lords of the Admiralty, who required a demonstration with estimated fuel; they are preparing a machine for the experiment.
