MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT.

On the 24th ult. five lads proceeded in boat for their amusement, from Portsmouth, New-Hampshire, to Clark's Island, in Portsmouth harbor. While near the Island, the boat upset, and two of the lads swam to the shore and called for help. "They were heard, (says the Portsmouth Oracle ) by Mr. Archelaus Fernald and his wife, who immediately ran to the relief of the boy, and with more than human strength drew a large wherry a considerable distance to the water. In this, with great exertion, they reached the boat, and took from the bottom a son of Mr. Oliver Briard, who had retained his hold, and rescued from drowning a son of Mr. Henry Haven, who had swam half way to the shore, became exhausted, and was sinking. The eldest of the lads, Jos. S. Brewster, aged 17, had made some progress to the land, but became overpowered by fatigue, and sunk, to rise no more. He was brother to the gallant spirit that ascended the roof of a church in New-York, and saved it from conflagration, and afterwards met death in the explosion of his ship; he was a lad of much promise, the only son, the staff and support of his widowed mother.
