Full Text
The gist of the New York Tribune's editorial comment upon Senator Hill's letter runs thus: Mr. Hill makes one of the most generous propositions ever known in politics. It is that the Democratic party shall be disbanded, because it is hated at the North, and that the Republican party shall be disbanded because it is hated at the South, and we shall all be together and form a millennial National Union party. Mr. Hill seems to have forgotten that the reasons for the hatred of the Democratic party at the North and of the Republican party at the South may both be excellent reasons why the Republican party should not be disbanded. This is good in its way as his splendid assumption of magnanimity in declaring that the Republican party will take the Presidency probably 'because the South wills it.' Mr. Hill must not suppose that Mr. Barnum has hatched a revolution up here. He is simply playing clown for a party that is sadly in need of amusement.
