In your Address to the people of the Bedford congressional district, before whom you are a candidate, you say, you shall not support Messrs. Calhoun, Clay or Webster, giving your reasons for that determination, and that, you shall not support Mr. Leigh, because "you know not what he is."
Now, Mr. Stuart, be so good, as to inform the voters of Bedford, what you are. We fear you are playing what is called, by your great Democratic party, a high game, "developments and alternatives."
Shall we not have those developments about the 20th of May next, at the grand Office Holders Caucus, that will assemble in the city of Baltimore, to dictate to the people of this Union, backed by the influence of your idol, Gen. Jackson, and his unbounded patronage? That development will be the nomination of Martin Van Buren, as a Vice President.
Are you, Mr. Stuart, in favor of such a Caucus? Will you support the nomination of such a Caucus? If the contest should settle down between Van Buren and White, which of those individuals will you support?
We are plain old fashioned people-the advocates of the principles of '98 and '99, as then understood. We are strict advocates of the right of instruction. We regard our representatives as our agents.
You, then, must come to the bit-you must speak out. If you do not, we shall show you that we are a powerful people, and that we will nail you to the counter on Monday next.
