Full Text

Dec. 22. On the 9th instant, our army commanded by his Excellency the Governor, arrived at Fort Prince George, opposite to Keowee, the first town in the Cherokee nation, after a very fatiguing march of ten days: The same evening 200 men from Lieut. Col. Singleton's corps joined the army, and made it 1700 strong. The small pox was at Keowee, but the Governor had taken all possible precautions to prevent any communication with that place, which is on the other side of the river: and we make no doubt they will prove effectual. Six Catawbas also joined the army with the 200 men above mentioned, but they had passes of health from justice Wyly at the Waterees. His Excellency had dismissed all the Cherokees that went along with him, except 28 men of the greatest note, who remained with him at the fort; these declared themselves perfectly satisfied to remain there in order to talk upon such points as might be necessary for effecting an accommodation: And the Little Carpenter, and other headmen and warriors were on their Journey thither; so that it is likely that conferences between the Governor and the heads of the nation are by this Time begun.
