Full Text

THURSDAY, August: KINGSTON, (Jamaica) June 23.

Extract of a Letter from a Gentleman at Hispaniola.

I reckoned without my host, when I expected to have joined my brethren on the 24th of June at Jamaica, and amused myself that day: but on the 3d current an Earthquake happened at seven o'clock in the evening, with such force that the town of Jacmel is entirely destroyed; and we have had since, certain accounts that Port-au-Prince doth not exist, and that there is not a house standing. St. Marks, the Caye, the Cape and other ports, with the sugar and indigo works are all overthrown, and the different shakes are not now ended. The first shock was the most severe, and lasted nine minutes; with this, every fine building was thrown down; mountains tumbled; valleys are destroyed; and several persons have perished. We have no provisions of any kind, and this country is ruined for many years.
