By private Letters and public Prints received by the last Vessel from England, we find that the most false and scandalous accounts have been transmitted from hence relative to the conduct of the Town, Trade and Province; Speeches which were never uttered have been put into the Mouths of the Speakers at the Meetings of the Trade; Affidavits taken ex parte respecting the horrid Massacre of March 5th, have been published; and the good People of this Province are represented in the public Prints in the most odious Colours the Pens of a Bernard, Robinson, Mein and Harrison, assisted by the Junto on this side the Water, were capable of executing: Instead of realizing the assurances and promises of M---y, which were conveyed to us through a friendly Medium, that our Grievances should be redressed, and the Inhabitants of this Town consoled for the loss of their Fellow Citizens in the horrid Massacre of March 5th, we have the Mortification to find, that Castle William, the Key of the Province, has by Order of the M---- r, and in the Face of our Charter, been delivered up to part of those Troops whose Enormities occasioned their Removal to the Island on which that Fortress stands; and that the Garrison of a Fortress built about 80 Years ago, and maintained by this Province at a Saving of Millions to the Nation, has been surprised and turned out of it, without any Stipulation for their leaving it with the least Honor of War; --- and those very Cannon, Mortars, &c. which under the Direction of the Province retook Annapolis and Port Royal, saved Nova Scotia more than once from a French Enemy, and contributed to the Conquest of Louisbourg by General Pepperrell, which Conquest gave Peace to Europe, are now like to remain in shameful Durace: --- That a large Fleet of Ships of War may be soon expected to rendezvous in this Harbour to watch and awe our Trade; which Fleet it is whispered, are to convey several Regiments as a Reinforcement to the Troops quartered in this Province, and again to recover footing in this Town: --- That Ad---n are meditating the Destruction of our CHARTER; but from the Instances of the Surrender of Castle William into the Hands of the King's Regular Troops, and the Removal of our General Assembly from its ancient and legal Seat the Town House in Boston, merely by Force of Ministerial Mandates, and against the declared Opinion of the Governor of the Province, we can be under no Apprehension as to what Parliament or Chancery may do respecting our Charter, for the Ministry seem to take it upon them to slice it as they please, and a few more Instructions, if ever we should have a Governor whose Maxim is that the Minister makes a Governor, and therefore a Governor must be subservient to a Minister, will leave no Part of it remaining.
