TO MRS. BARNEY.

Insatiate woman!--wanderer from the fold
Of female modesty--year after year
Came and departed, and in public gold
Found thee luxuriant. Then thou wert dear
To a whole nation--and thy wedded idol
Threw wide on pleasure's wanton neck the bridle.
But public mind is changeful as the sea--
No always slumbering can its currents be--
The purifying tempest comes, and isles
Which have been basking in the brightest smiles
Are buried in the waves--and others rise
To light and being--this we think is better;
Come, madam--take that onion from your eyes
And write the tyrant a good natured "letter."
