MONTEGO-BAY, August 9.
THE crew of a small Spanish schooner, which arrived here last Wednesday evening, from the coast of Cuba, mention the following circumstances, which certainly relate to the piracy of the sloop belonging to the Duckenfield Hall, Capt. Foster:
A schooner on her passage from the Havanna to Byam on the 30th ult. saw a vessel at anchor at Santa Cruz—went alongside, and found there were three men on board, who were exchanging sugar and rum with the people who lived on shore, for provisions. Upon enquiring whence they came, they said they were Americans:—being desired to produce their papers they could shew none. The mainsail was observed to be very much stained with blood, and the unsatisfactory account the people gave of themselves induced a suspicion in the minds of the Spaniards that they were upon some dishonest scheme; they therefore seized the people, took possession of the vessel, and carried both to Byam, where an inventory of the property has been taken, and the people lodged in gaol. From the circumstance of the mainsail being stained with blood, it may be apprehended, that as there were four men who mutinied upon Mr. Foster, one may have been murdered by the three who are now in the prison of Byam.

Event Details

A Spanish schooner en route from Havana to Byam on July 30 sighted a vessel at anchor at Santa Cruz with three men aboard trading sugar and rum for provisions. The men claimed to be Americans but had no papers. Their bloodstained mainsail and vague account raised suspicions of dishonesty, leading the Spaniards to seize the vessel and crew, inventory the property, and imprison the men in Byam. The incident is linked to the piracy of the sloop belonging to Duckenfield Hall, Capt. Foster, involving a mutiny by four men.
