His Capture and the Recovery of the Things Stolen.
A farmer living near Davenport, by the name of Christian Hartwig, having driven into that city on Saturday and left his team fastened to a post in front of a store, while absent in another part of the town had his team stolen. Learning of the guard at the bridge that a team answering the description of the one he had lost had passed over to this side he came on to this city in pursuit.
The thief, it appears, had stopped at the house of J. A. Gray, Esq., of the firm of Annawalt, Denkmann & Co., and there stolen a gold bracelet and a cameo brooch when he was interrupted by the entrance of a member of the family, and thereupon he made his way to Mr. Evans' livery stable, where he offered the team and wagon for $10. As that sum was far below the actual value of even the team, Mr. Evans' suspicions were aroused that a theft had been committed. The police were quickly summoned and Officers Bollman and Brennan took him into custody and conveyed him to the city marshal's office. The bracelet and brooch were recovered as well as the team and wagon and the thief was taken to jail.
This morning he was taken before Justice Hawes for examination. No great amount of information concerning him was elicited other than that he had been seen about Davenport for the past month. He said his name was John Driscoll. He is a hard looking scamp and it is thought has a knowledge of some of the burglaries committed in this vicinity lately. We learn that while in jail last night he acknowledged to having just been liberated from states prison at Joliet for horse stealing. The justice fixed his bail at the very small sum of $400, and in default remanded him to jail.
Later—The prisoner also was taken before Justice Cropper this morning on charge of stealing jewelry, and bound over upon that charge with bail fixed at $700
