"COPLEY—On a canvas to fill the niche in the Guildhall Council Chamber, 24 by 50, this painter is at work with all his laborious patience, on the Relief of Gibraltar. This picture has three groupes, one of British sailors, seizing possession of a Spanish gun boat. One of a Felucca in flames, surrendering to an English boat, and Sir Roger Curtis, with hastening humanity, saving the enemy. The third groupe is of portraits, the principal officers—Lord Heathfield is on horseback, Sir R. Boyde, and Gen. de la Motte are on his right hand. Those on his left are Gen. Green, Col. Takenhouse, Col. Picton, Col. Hughes, Col. Cranf, Col. Slipperque, Col. Hardy, Col. Tickell, Major Valotton—Col. Lindsay is the officer in the Highland dress, and he comes off, as he ever has done, very boldly indeed. The well known alacrity of Major Lewis not waiting for his boots, is properly remembered on the canvas.
In a small compartment at the bottom of the picture, is a view of Gibraltar, with Lord Howe's fleet entering the bay—A portrait of Lord Howe, and why not the other Admirals? is sketched to be there in profile medallion. Taken altogether, it will be a magnificent work, worthy of the artist and his art, a record, fit to be given and received by the first Commercial City in the world, to the best exertions of British arms!
COPLEY, amidst studies such as these, has not much time for Portraits. To the praise of his industry, what time he has he gives: There is a small length of Lord and Lady Wetcombe, and their daughter—And a whole length of Mr. Adams, the late Ambassador from America. Having left this situation, a Terrestrial globe is painted under his eye, signifying the World is before him, and as he stands, he is on the right side of the Atlantic!"
