Two Unions Back Ewing for President

SAN FRANCISCO - The Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, assembled in annual convention here, unanimously designated Oscar R. Ewing, federal social security administrator and former vice-chairman of the Democratic National Committee, as their choice for President.

On June 23, the Meat Cutters and Butchers union awarded Ewing a Gold Cup Trophy for "his distinguished service to advancing the health, education and economic security of all the people of the United States."

Also, Max Zaritsky, president emeritus of Amalgamated Hat, Cap and Millinery Workers, AFL, gave Ewing a new grey Stetson hat "to throw into the Presidential ring."

Stating that Ewing is his "favorite candidate for President" and that the Hatters Union had presented "campaign hats" of the identical size to both Roosevelt and Truman before their successful campaigns of 1944 and 1948, Zaritsky said, "This hat will bring the same good luck to Oscar Ewing."

A special scroll was recently presented to Ewing by the joint CIO and AFL Labor Councils of New York on behalf of their more than one million members in the City of New York, "for his effective and unrelenting battle to protect the working men and women of this country against the triple-threat insecurities of old-age, unemployment and sickness."
