Carrier Returns Gold-Piece To Subscriber
A rare degree of honesty was revealed this week when Willie Banks, of 511 Tatnall Street, SW., '38 graduate of Morehouse College and dependable "World" carrier on the West Side in the Simpson-Ashby area, returned a $2.50 gold-piece to one of his subscribers who gave him pennies in making the required twenty cents for the weekly fee, he told District Circulation Manager Clinton Bronner, but he did not know which of these persons had made the mistake of giving him a $2.50 gold-piece for a penny. He said, under the circumstances, he could do nothing but "sit tight" and wait until some subscriber detected the error and got in touch with the World circulation department.
It wasn't long after the incident before Mrs. Williams of 548 Simpson Street, NW., contacted Circulation Manager Charles Bronner and informed him that she had given one of his carriers fifteen cents in change, four pennies, and a $2.50 gold-piece for twenty cents, mistaking the gold-piece for a penny. She asked his aid in making the recovery.
Banks, on the look-out for just this "cue," immediately saw that Mrs. Williams received the coveted gold-piece.
