BERLIN- (INS)- Unconfirmed reports spread late Saturday that the Soviet occupation authorities in troubled East Berlin would repeal the martial law proclamation during the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, a West Berlin official said he had received information from refugees that hundreds of East Germans were still being arrested in various localities over the Soviet zone.
As a possible forerunner of the lifting of the martial law imposed after Wednesday's bloody Berlin riots Russian tanks were withdrawn from the streets where the Soviet sector adjoins those of the three western powers.
The U. S. commander in Berlin, Maj. Gen. Thomas S. Timberman, charged that the Russians now had 25,000 troops in Berlin to control the defiant populace. Timberman said allied forces in the city total half that number.
Timberman called a news conference to deny that categorically that "West Berliners or any of the allies had anything to do with the demonstrations."
Russian tanks roll into Potsdam Plaza in East Berlin as Communists tried desperately to halt a rebellion and general strike by more than 100,000 German workers, women and youths. Sixteen persons were reported killed and hundreds injured by Russian troops and East German police. Martial law was being enforced by 10,000 Russian soldiers and 200 heavy tanks, as the demonstration, originally started in protest of labor conditions, became a major anti-Communist uprising.
