Supreme Court of United States Grants Thirty-Day Stay In Celebrated Kentucky Case.

Washington, Jan. 30.—The supreme court of the United States Monday granted a stay of the mandate in the case of James Howard, of Kentucky, convicted of the murder of Gov. Goebel. On January 2 last the court rendered a decision adverse to Howard, and the effect of the mandate, according to the rules of the court, would be to make operative February 2 the sentence of the trial court, which has been affirmed by the Kentucky court of appeals. The motion for the stay was presented by J. W. Blackburn, Jr., who explained that Howard's counsel wished to put a motion for a rehearing. After a brief recess Chief Justice Fuller granted a stay of 30 days on the return of the mandate.
