Full Text

A general order from the War Department at Washington announces that Gen. Wm. T. Sherman will be relieved of the command of the army on the 1st of November, in accordance with his own request preparatory to his retirement from active service. Gen. Sherman has not yet quite arrived at the age fixed by law for retirement, but he has preferred to anticipate the date of disability, and to give way gracefully to his successor rather than grasp to the last the reins of military power. What his plans for the future may be are of course within his own breast, but it is stated on what is considered good authority that he does not propose to take a prominent part in political life, as some of his friends have suggested, but will spend the evening hours of his life in the quiet enjoyment of the pleasures of a hearty and contented old age. Gen. Sherman's career has been one of more than ordinary distinction and usefulness. His military life has extended over a long period of years, and during the war he rose by rapid steps until he ranked second only to Gen. Grant, succeeding him in the command of the army on the election of the latter to the presidency in 1869. Gen. Sherman's retirement makes way for Gen. Sheridan, who will take command of the army on November 1.
