Full Text

Mr. Prentice—The proposal to establish Independent Banks, appears to have called the attention of the public to the conduct of those who manage the State Bank. Whilst some of your correspondents were writing on this subject, be so good as to request some of them to inform the public on the following particulars—as to which I know nothing more, than any who have lived in Maine:—

1. The amount of the capital of the State Bank—the sum held by the state, and the sum held by individuals.

2. The capital employed at Frankfort, and at each of the Branches—with the dividend at the Mother Bank and the Branches respectively.

3. The aggregate sums lent at each place—1st, to merchants—2d, to farmers—and 3d, to manufacturers & mechanics.

An answer on all these points, will enable the public to ascertain, whether the Bank has been well managed, or its loans principally made to dealers in British goods, or to those enterprising men who have endeavoured to bring into play the internal resources of our country.
