Full Text
While John Newman, one of the old veterans at the Vermont Soldier's Home, and Edwin Elwell were hunting in Glastenbury last week, they discovered bear tracks in the snow and traced them to a small den. Feeling satisfied that larger game than they had started out to hunt was in the den, they went down to a little hamlet a couple of miles distant and got Charles Silver to aid them in digging it out. Returning with proper tools, they began operations, while one was using an axe, a bear's paw was reached out and grabbed it, when Elwell put the contents of his shot gun into the den. He had shot and killed the owner of the paw, which was a large black bear weighing 200 lbs. On getting her carcass out, two little cubs, not over six inches long, were found. These were killed also. The bounty on the hides will amount to $45.
