DENY KENNETH IS TIRED

Published Reports That One of Brothers Wanted to Quit Brings Hot Retort

Chicago, Ill., July 3.-(AP)-John and Kenneth Hunter, co-pilots of the "City of Chicago" which started today on the 520th hour aloft at 6:40 a. m. (CST), threatened a half hour later to bring down the plane which has exceeded the previous nonstop record by almost 100 hours, unless published reports of Kenneth's desire to quit were corrected.

John Hunter dropped a note today expressing keen disappointment and dissatisfaction because of the partial publication of confidential messages between the brothers. Yesterday the contents of a note to Walter and Albert Hunter, pilots of the refueling plane, were not made public, but one of the brothers was quoted as saying that Kenneth, the youngest brother, was "getting tired and wanted to land" at 520 hours.

John and Kenneth previously had expressed a determination to remain in the air until after July 4.

Today's message signed by John follows:

Walt-Al- read this to yourselves: "Say, who in the hell put that slush in the papers about Beans getting worried and nervous? Whoever done it had damn little to do, after him crawling around on this ship night and day trying to bring the record to Chicago. Then somebody put that line of slush in the paper. Can't I write a damn thing to you guys without it getting in the paper? I only told you that he was hard to wake up and so am I. This caused plenty of hell between me and him.

He came damn near jumping out in a chute and it wouldn't take a hell of a lot to make me do the same. Now I want this corrected or this ship may land quick. If he was that way anybody had damn little to do after him staying this long.

"We want this bull stuff stopped and put in right stuff."

At 7:40 o'clock, the "City of Chicago" had completed the 194th refueling contact.

The record breaking brothers were 100 hours ahead of the previous world's record set last July by Dale Jackson and Forrest O'Brine in the St. Louis Robin.

Also, with the passing of the 520th hour, the offer of an oil company of $100 an hour, now amounting to $10,000, expired. The offer began with the breaking of the previous record.

Sidelights on Endurance Test

Sky Harbor Airport, Chicago, July 3.-(AP)-Those who believe the flying Hunter brothers will be eligible for the House of David band at the completion of their endurance flight will be sadly disappointed. Flight managers said today the brothers shave at least every other day with water lowered to them in gallon jugs. Moreover, they take daily sponge baths with rubbing alcohol.

The business of keeping the endurance fliers in clothes has been a difficult one. Several days ago the brothers were sprayed with oil from their motor. A short time later they discarded their oil saturated clothes.

Yesterday Kenneth Hunter tossed a package out of his plane. In the package was his trousers.

"It's too hot to wear them," he signaled.

Spare trousers were rushed to the endurance plane for chill night flying.

Among those who have found the endurance flight a test of their endurance are A. Ostli and George W. Kenodell, official observers for the National Aeronautical association.

They have been working 12 hour shifts since the flight started. Both can instantly recognize the sound of the endurance ship's motor, as it whirs over the field at 15 minute intervals during the night.
