SHALL THE CHILDREN BE PROTECTED?
The statement made in yesterday's APPEAL regarding the wretches who betray the innocence of childhood has caused considerable comment in this city.
People look at it in three different ways. One class believes in the existence of the evil, and are willing to render any assistance in having it stamped out.
Another class holds that the publication of such articles will injure the city.
And some people deny in toto the existence of the state of affairs described by the APPEAL.
In another column is a correspondence from a gentleman who acknowledges the existence of the evil, but believes that the number of children tampered with is placed too high by the APPEAL. Granted, for the sake of argument, that such is the fact; if any number of children, or even one child, has been made the victim of a scoundrel's lusts, any agitation that will clear the city of the wretches who tamper with childhood is a desirable and needed agitation.
The man who believes in covering up these facts with a view of "not giving the city a black eye," is pursuing a very foolish course.
The idea of keeping perfectly quiet while brutes in the disguise of men are inveigling young children into the training school of harlotry, is a proposition which no sane man will harbor.
The officers of the city, the physicians, and men whose business takes them about town at night, can soon convince the doubters that there are scores of men in this city who put in most of their time in the pursuit of children. Fortunately while the Grand Jury was in session, one of these parties was caught "dead to rights," and indicted. If the proper evidence can be secured, more of the same ilk will be behind the bars also.
If there are numbers of people who grope in darkness regarding this revolting state of affairs, it is time that their eyes were opened.
The APPEAL calls on all good citizens to lend such assistance as they are able in this matter, and spot those who are hampering the effort to rid Carson of an undesirable class of population.
