Full Text

The expedition against Boulogne, under Sir Sydney Smith, though planned with much nautical skill, had at the date of our last British advices, owing to the weather; proved utterly abortive. Every thing had been arranged by Sir Sidney for a gallant attack of the place; the line was actually leading in, the bombardment had commenced, and the hope of success animated every bosom; when, to the mortification of all concerned, the wind which had before been favorable shifted to another quarter and blew a gale.

Preservation. The situation was now the object of attention— "The largest vessels were in imminent danger of going ashore, and the smaller vessels rolling gunwale to."

With much difficulty the expedition, after sustaining very considerable damage, returned to the Downs. It is supposed that so much injury has been received as will prevent any attempt on the same extensive scale for the season.
