Letters from Prince George of the 24th past, contain the following advices; that Oconostota, the great warrior of Chote, had beset that fort with about 300 gun men, and had wounded Lieut. Coytmore, the commanding officer of that fort, in the left breast, which 'twas thought would prove mortal; two others were also wounded, tho' not dangerously: That Ensign Milton upon this judged it improper and unsafe for the garrison that the hostages should continue any longer only confined to a room, ordered the soldiers to put them in irons; and the soldiers accordingly set about executing these orders, when the first who attempted to take hold of an Indian, was killed on the spot, being struck on the head with a tomahawk, stabbed in the belly with a knife, and his jaw broke; another was wounded in the forehead; this outrage so alarmed and incensed the garrison, that it was thought expedient to put all the hostages to death immediately, which was accordingly done: That in the night, the Indians which were without the fort, drew near, and fired two signal guns, and several times cried out in the Cherokee language, "Fight strong and you shall be assisted," soon after which the Indians began firing on all sides of the fort; and hence it was suspected, that it had been concerted between the hostages within, and their friends without, to attack and massacre the garrison that night; for, upon searching the apartment in which the hostages lay, there was found, besides a bottle of poison, which they designed to have emptied into the well, several tomahawks buried in the earth, which their friends had privately conveyed thither; so that the putting the hostages to death has proved a very critical event, the garrison being freed from future apprehensions within.
