A Spirited Election.

One of the most spirited elections of recent years took place yesterday. The election was held to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Judge Ferrill, as ordinary, and that of Capt. J. J. McGowan, as tax collector. For the former position there were several candidates, the most prominent of whom were Major Screven, Capt. McAlpin, Judge Keilbach and Mr. Collins. Within a week of the election, the two latter ones came down. Judge Keilbach being favorable to Major Screven. During the few days preceding the election, the campaign was hotly contested.

There were only two candidates for tax collector, Mr. David Wells and Mr. T. F. Thomson. Mr. Wells is a member of the legislature from this county.
