Calls On Gov. de Castro to Be Candidate

In a radio address on Friday night, Ernest Shulterbrandt of the V.I. Non-Partisan League, stated:

Gov. Morris F. de Castro has told us that he has no wish to be re-appointed. The circumstances here, however, present a situation which cannot be regarded as closed. Gov. de Castro, too has obviously continued to demand and receive the respect of official Washington, be it even under a new administration. One need but ponder, why the President of the U.S. would summon him to an extraordinary and highly confidential briefing of all Governors, if his replacement by a person not so briefed were being seriously considered.

"Gov. de Castro continues to hold the high esteem of the people of their islands whom he has served so conscientiously during the past years. We are therefore met with a situation wherein we must decide whether this last available possibility for a truly representative Governor must receive our support, whether we shall continue to progress toward self-confidence politically or whether at this time of crisis we shall so present ourselves as people with a political inferiority complex whose vision and perspective is obstructed by petty considerations of personality.

"Now then, do we call upon the Hon. Morris F. de Castro to again make it possible that he continue as our governor, not in his name but rather as a symbol of a people's determination to fight its own battles, to determine its own affairs and rightfully and proudly to chart its own destiny."
