We were absent from the city on the 4th, and can therefore say nothing of the celebration from our own observation. Report says it was "so so." A part of the bells were rung, as per order—cannon were fired as usual—the military paraded, and displayed their plumes and regimentals—a procession (rather a short one) was formed and marched to the place appointed—an oration, said to have been a very good one, was pronounced—a dinner, we presume a sumptuous one, was served up, and of course eaten, at the Franklin House. It was probably devoured by 'genteel company.' There was less drunkenness than is common on such occasions; and, at last, the sun set in the west as usual, with the farewell compliment of a national salute—and the day passed off much as other days do, and was followed by a ball in the evening at the City Hotel.
