Massachusetts Policy.
The policy of the Whigs in the Government of our own State is now what it has been, and may be judged by its fruits in past years. They have maintained untarnished the honor of the Commonwealth, at home and abroad; and amidst the bankruptcy and repudiation of other States, have sustained its pecuniary credit, so that no breath of suspicion rests upon it. Under their auspices, education, scattered broadcast by the bounty of the State, and fostered by its supervising care brings its smiles and its joys to every intellect and every heart within our borders. Public charity, sustained by the patronage, and regulated by the watchful care of the State opens its hand to the destitute and the afflicted. A system of internal improvements, which has lived down all the calumnies of our adversaries, has brought into neighborhood the extremes of our territory, opened a direct communication for the exchange of the proceeds of our mechanical labor with the products of the fertile regions of the West, and is now daily adding to our wealth and prosperity. A currency convertible on demand into gold and silver, supplies the channels of business, and meets the wants of an active and enterprising community. Agriculture experiences the bounty of the State, while manufactures and the mechanic arts, so far as they can be aided and encouraged by laws passed by State authority, receive such aid and encouragement. And in the exercise of all this care for the great interests of the community, a wise economy has presided over our treasury, neither permitting useless expenditures, nor withholding appropriations from objects deserving the encouragement of an enlightened people.
