Keeping On The Civil Defense Front

Some weeks ago we carried a series of articles meant to again arouse our people to a sense of their civil defense duties.

With a review of what was done during the last world war, we advanced that in another war which would be carried on with more modern equipment, that it was highly necessary that we take a place immediately in the line of safety, in keeping with the added peril we might face.

The information has come that the Civil Defense Headquarters for the Southeast will be moved from Atlanta to Thomasville, because Atlanta is considered a critical target area. The equipment and force therefore will find quarters in a safer section whereupon the nerve center of safety information would not be hampered in case of an attack on a crucial point.

This bit of news makes it all the more necessary that we busy ourselves in defense education and maneuvers. Being in a critical area our liabilities are fearfully increased and local units are working to the end of bringing our interest and facility up to standard.

It will be recalled that during the last world combat, the various wards were organized with their air raid shelters well designated and the ward patrolmen thoroughly instructed with respect to their duties.

It need not be emphasized here that we face a more deadly peril in a new war of modern death-dealing equipment, nor should there be any excess labor in the stressing to one his own plain duty for his safety, but let it be said with all the emphasis at our command that the Defense Authority, being bound by a solemn and sacred duty, has before it a mammoth task which it certainly could not afford to default.

Every citizen, high and low, regardless of creed or circumstance faces one common danger in allowing interest to lag in this vital measure.

Those who are charged with the stewardship of Civil Defense are invited to participate in these columns in any safety publicity measures to which they might have access. Notices of meetings of air wardens, safety committees and otherwise educational measures, will receive the attention justly due a vital program, meant for protection in a war that may be brought to every fireside in the nation.
