FOR THE ENQUIRER,
NEW SONG
"Tis war—then away with your factious debates!
Adjourn them till peace has establish'd our states;
The law is enacted—avaunt with your jars—
Columbia's a Star in a cluster of stars.
What star but a comet a sister would shove?
Ye meteors avaunt! we are planets in love;
Combined in our orbits the vapours deform
And shine forth harmonious in Tempest and Storm.
To know is to love such a system as ours—
Most pure in its origin, purpose and powers
For the aim of the sages who brought it to pass
Was to fix the most good for our freemen in mass.
The despots of Europe to Liberty cool,
Make wisdom, brute muscle—free knowledge, a tool
But let the true champions of man in the West,
Demonstrate that disciplin'd mind is the best.
The Law is our Ruler, and Right is our Code—
This renders each dwelling an hallow'd abode!
Possess'd of such treasure, if 'tis not maintain'd,
Then man is a wretch, & deserves to be chain'd!
The law, human nature, the Freeman's high soul
Revolts at the Press-gang & Britain's control.
To guard their true children whom Tyrants tre-pan,
O let a brave people unite to a man.
Long be the duration of liberty's cast—Mav the Empire of Freedom all Empire outlast;
And Seamen and Freemen assert it sublime,
While Ages on Ages shall beautify Time!
