Palmer Legion building destroyed
PALMER (AP) The $50,000 American Legion building was destroyed by fire Saturday afternoon as volunteer firemen toiled futilely in 15 below zero weather to extinguish the blaze.
The fire is believed to have started in the basement of the single story frame structure.
More than a hundred volunteers from widely scattered parts of the Matanuska valley were called after the blaze was discovered at 1:30 p. m. They were directed by fire chief Ray Lancaster, who also is the Palmer Legion commander.
