On Tuesday last commenced the trial of Thomas Oliver Selfridge, Esq. of Boston, on an indictment for manslaughter.— Counsel for the Commonwealth, the Attorney and Solicitor Generals: for the Defendant, the Hon. Christopher Gore, and Hon. Samuel Dexter, Esq'rs.—This trial is in consequence of Mr. Selfridge's killing a young Gentleman by the name of Austin, on the Exchange, in Boston, last summer, who was about to exercise on Mr. S. the fashionable and polite correction of caning — the consequence of which was melancholy, and justly to be regretted by every friend to humanity and prudence—but of the criminality of the action we shall not assume the province of deciding ;-one thing, however, we would observe—the transaction did not originate in a question of politics, but the Chronicle has been constantly endeavouring to make it one; and in a manner, base and unjustifiable. When the trial shall have been brought to an issue, a statement shall be laid before our readers so far as our information shall extend without favor or affection to either party.
