English Cars Must Pass Compulsory Fitness Tests

LONDON, (A)--Transport Minister Ernest Marples the man who brought in new fitness tests for aging autos—confessed his own car hadn't made the grade.

Marples told a road safety conference:

"Some people have urged that the tests should stop because they cause inconvenience to owners of older cars.

"A vehicle over 50 years old has passed this test easily. I've known a vehicle only 2 years old which has failed—my own."

The tests will become compulsory soon.
