Ultimatum!

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19-(UP) -President Roosevelt today directing striking Anthracite coal miners to go back to work within 48 hours or face the consequences of "necessary steps" by the government to protect the nation.

The President said the walkout was doing the country "serious injury."

Mr. Roosevelt's directive was contained in telegrams sent to 83 national and local officials of the United Mine Workers.

Approximately 12,000 miners are still out in a strike which began 21 days ago.
