The National Intelligencer appears to think that a serious diversity of opinion exists among the Republicans of Massachusetts, as to the most proper course of policy to be adopted at this time, with regard to general and state politics. We apprehend, if the Intelligencer will again examine the subject, its conclusion will be different. It is true, we have recently given currency to the speculations of several respectable correspondents on this topic, wherein some diversity has been perceptible. Some of these writers appear to think that conciliation with the American portion of the federalists is still practicable. Others are of opinion that a straight forward course, wholly regardless of federal movements, is the only true one. It appears evident to us, that the agitation of this subject will result in one conclusion, viz. That the indications of conciliation on the part of the federalists are either insincere, or so feeble as not to be deserving of attention: That the republicans have fully evinced a desire to co-operate with the American federalists, but that the proposition has not been received with that spirit of cordiality to which it was entitled. Under these circumstances, one course, and only one, remains. The republicans will maintain their cause in a dignified, firm, independent manner. They will judiciously select their candidates, and vigorously support them. The overtures made to the federalists by those republicans who were friendly to conciliation, not having been met in a corresponding spirit, the whole party will at once see the necessity of a vigorous and simultaneous effort to place their cause in that commanding position to which, by its merits, it is entitled. The agitation of the question will have the salutary effect of uniting the party, and of bringing to the polls its entire strength. In this situation of things, it is morally certain, that success will in a very short time crown our efforts, and that republicanism, which has so long and so gloriously predominated throughout the union, will once more rise triumphant in Massachusetts.
