Full Text

As we had conjectured, so it appears, that the attacks upon Mr. McFarland, a member of Congress from N. Carolina, turn out to be exactly of the same character as the infamous proceedings against Matthew Lyon under the administration of Mr. Adams; it turns out to be wholly a political party piece of infamy, where law, justice, public morals and probity, are set aside to overwhelm or to annoy a plain man, who has been elected to Congress in preference to a lawyer and federalist. Mr. McFarland has been confined in a prison on a charge of perjury and forgery—the perjury is, that he had sworn to a certain man being concerned in pelting him with eggs after his election; the forgery in presenting a receipt for the charges of a witness who attended the court, when it appears that there were two witnesses of the same name, and that one was mistaken for the other! If the state of North Carolina is so strangely relaxed in, its laws and its justice, it must be worse than Philadelphia, when Robert Wharton was mayor, and Joe Thomas superintendent of the public morals.—Aurora.

Attacks on Congressman McFarland for perjury (swearing a man pelted him with eggs post-election) and forgery (mistaken witness receipt) are political infamy akin to Lyon's treatment under Adams, sidelining law to target a non-federalist.
